Physical network and the worldwide software-defined networking (SDN) market

It is now clear and obvious that, for the stakes of flexibility, agility, scalability, productivity and performance, Cloud computing and the Big data industry is driving the need for SDN.

For those who are unfamiliar, software-defined networking (SDN) market comprises: physical network infrastructure, virtualization/control software, SDN applications (including network and security services), and professional services.

The momentum around this innovative and emerging architectural model is growing enabling inter alia: automated provisioning, network virtualization, and network programmability for datacenters at cloud-providers and enterprise networks.

Hyperscale datacenters and large-scale cloud service providers are adoption the new architecture and are harnessing: agility, flexibility, and programmability.

According to IDC, the worldwide software-defined networking (SDN) market will have a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 53.9% from 2014 to 2020 and will be worth nearly $12.5 billion in 2020.

While the physical network, encompassing datacenter switches, will still account for the largest single segment of the SDN market in 2020, the fastest growth will be found in the two software categories: the virtualization/control layer and SDN applications.
